Chilingirian Quartet - 7:30pm, Saturday 3rd October 2009This famous quartet is making a welcome return to Sevenoaks to open our 2009-10 Season. They will be playing three very different quartets, ending with one of Beethoven's great 'late' quartets. Haydn's six quartets Opp 71 & 74 are collectively known as the "Apponyi" quartets - the Count of that name paid the composer 100 ducats for the privilege of having them dedicated to him. They are are mature works, delightful music from the "Father of the String Quartet". The third of Benjamin Britten's three quartets was the composer's last work, with a very spiritual slow movement. The Beethoven Quartet, a large work compared to the other two quartets on the programme, also has a wornderful slow movement - the Cavatina is deservedly famous; this is heart-rending music.
